Elizabeth Ann Bloomer Warren Ford (1918 – 2011)

Hanging out in the rain outside Jerry Ford's suburban ranch in Alexandria, as I recall, on the day Nixon resigned, was one of my jobs at the great metropolitan daily newspaper.

After hours, Betty Ford came out and waved to us. She was perfectly coiffed, perfectly dressed, sheltered by an umbrella held by someone else. It was her first action as reluctant First Lady.

And she was absolutely schnockered. No one knew at the time, of course, but she moved as if she were underwater and had a very convincing and utterly false smile on her face. The perfection of her hair and clothes was totally bogus.

Later pix show her real person shining through. The whites of her eyes became visible. You can see the same face morphing going on with LiLo -- ankle bracelet on, she looks perhaps 18. Ankle bracelet off, she looks perhaps 50.

RIP, Betty Ford. You stepped up to bat.
