I'm way beyond criticizing Martha Nussbaum for showing her fanny. Or whatever it is. That's not at all what I'm objecting to. Here are some of her betters in the pansexual pantheon of really well-dressed academic Old Babes.

Please note the suede. It's way cooler than leather.

Please note silk shirt and the tiny rings in the ears.

I think she was buried in this Issey Miyake dress.

1) I'm wondering what you think of Paglia's look in this recent interview.

2) Issey Miyake is the man.

She's in love with a Brazilian superstar at the time of this interview. Perhaps she sees no other route than to exhibit as a peahen? Susie Bright was dead on when she described Paglia as a butch bottom. I can't recall if I was the one who determined that as such, she needed to exhibit as a top to get play.

Interesting that she is still harping on the (culturally accepted/lauded) ability of males to "compartmentalize" sexual flings from emotionally bonded relationships. I don't agree with her point of view -- this is not something unique to men -- and I wish she would just acknowledge that patriarchal models are the problem. Polyamorous women are deemed monstrous. Why? Because someone has to mind the nest?

butch bottom, hee. but this is valuable sartorial info. it would explain, for example, the kind of couture camo appearance of the blouse in the video. perfect.
i've thought she was obnoxious since the early 1990s, when only i perceived she was an asshole. i stopped listening to her then, but i've never stopped paying attention to what she wears, as an older academic female much in the limelight.

Camille "complaining about rape is like complaining you lost money at a casino" Paglia is such an ugly ideologue it exudes from every photo of her. She looks like someone's Republican mom dressing cool to score weed before she calls the cops.

You've been writing witty/thoughtful but at times sharply judgemental essays about older women's looks, some informed by the impressions created by their politics, as in the previous post about Martha Nussbaum. Paglia makes her name as pandering faux-lefty contrarian who dabbles in rape denial, praising the authentic purity of right wingers and talking shit about other feminists. To me that informs how her look comes off - a backstabbing poseur.

As for thinking everybody over 35 looks like a republican mom - not my thing, though sometimes everyone under 25 looks 12.

it's really about the clothes, and how they telegraph one's sexuality, as well as one's intellectual viability and employableness, which MN seems to be trying to do without much success. we aren't exactly trying to determine or proscribe MN's sexuality, but merely to ascertain what she's trying to express and how she fails to do so. [community profile] filmstills has accurately pegged it as dommey femmey and pinpointed, quite rightly, i think, carine roitfeld, editor of french vogue, as the proper role model for MN's aspirational fashion. roitfeld has no politics as far as is known, or indeed any brain.

paglia has no such problems, and expresses quite explicitly, and age-appropriately, what [profile] minniethemoocha hilariously pegs perfectly as butch bottom. hence the couture camo blouse she is seen wearing on the video clip somewhere in these vast comments.

which may explain the political, as it's all personal. yannow?

1. none of these women wear a lot of jewelry
2. issey always rules.
3. i'm not feeling paglia, perhaps based on my perception and knowledge of her politics and thought. but also, her look does not communicate to me. it's strangely mute for someone with such a loud 'voice.'
