Officials reject allegations of substandard care

Dr. Anne Marie Wallace came to New Mexico after completing a fellowship in breast surgery at Stanford University Medical Center, where she was selected as the 2003-04 Susan G. Komen Fellow.
During nearly six years at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, the breast cancer surgeon and researcher helped establish a high-risk screening program for patients with breast disease; collaborated with colleagues on National Institute of Health funded grants; and worked on a project with the MD Anderson Medical Center in Houston.
Now, she is embroiled in a bitter lawsuit with UNM in which she alleges she lost her job after reporting instances of substandard care — a claim the university’s lawyer “adamantly denies.”
In one of the first cases filed under the state’s new whistleblower law, Wallace contends she confronted incidents of surgical care of breast cancer patients that fell beneath accepted standards, including surgeries performed by colleagues and superiors.( Read more... )
