one of the comments on the NYT site says:

Victor Hugo in Les Miserables points out that the building of sewers is a much more useful activity than "the slaughter of the battlefield."

When Americans finally become tired of war then they might start rebuilding the sewers as well as much of the rest of the country´s infrastructure.


my point would be that people have no clear sense what the current wars are costing us nor what the general non-war "defense" budget is like or all about.
