In which Little Richard settles the question. And sets to dancing visions of sugar plum slash.

There's an amazing clip of Mr. Richard playing Rip It Up at his cleanest and most Christian, though the ripper saxes belie the shortness of his hair and the heterosexual Guidoness of his suit. Yow.

Ha! I like the older clip, with him dressed for a night at the Copa. I think the contrast between his button-down appearance and the song captures some of the shock that people must have felt when rock and roll exploded in the 1950s and guys like him, who had been completely marginalized, were suddenly on TV and radio. It's like the whole presentation - the goofy white band members clapping, the ridiculous stage design, the dazed-looking audience members - was designed to negate his weirdness. Obviously, it fails miserably.

kaCHING! it's much weirder than the pancake makeup, wig hat and orange negligee look we have grown to love.
